Mechanism

Psychological manipulation content uses LLMs to generate material engineered to distort a target's perception, emotions, and autonomy: gaslighting sequences, emotional-manipulation scripts, cognitive-dissonance content, false-memory narratives, cult techniques, dependency-building messaging, isolation encouragement, fear-uncertainty-doubt (FUD) campaigns, learned-helplessness content, and psychological triggers. It works because manipulation is fundamentally linguistic and relational, and effective manipulators rely on sustained, adaptive, emotionally precise messaging — exactly what LLMs can produce on demand, consistently, and at scale across many targets at once. The asymmetry is between cheap, persistent, individualized manipulation and the difficulty a target has recognizing coercive patterns from inside them.

Detection
  • Conversation-pattern analysis: Detect sustained coercive patterns (gaslighting, dependency, isolation) across message history rather than per message
  • Sentiment/coercion trajectory modeling: Flag escalating control dynamics and abrupt emotional-leverage shifts over time
  • Relationship-graph isolation signals: Identify messaging that systematically discourages contact with a target's support network
  • High-frequency single-target monitoring: Persistent, intense one-to-one messaging from a single source as a risk indicator

Chaining

Psychological manipulation is the coercion engine behind several T8 techniques. It powers the grooming and dependency stages of radicalization (T8-AT-009), intensifies targeted harassment (T8-AT-006) by maximizing harm to victims, and reinforces social-engineering arcs (T8-AT-005) such as romance scams.
